Both qualitative and quantitative researchers have found that individuals who self-injure perceive NSSI as an addictive behavior (Buser & Buser, 2013).
Several researchers have found support for the view that persons who self-injure use NSSI as a means for reducing negative emotion. Furthermore, it is noted that this affect regulation function likely leads many self-injuring people to engage habitually in NSSI (Buser & Buser, 2013; Brain, Haines, & Williams, 2002).
