Due to the many presenting concerns (health issues, safety concerns, potential of neglect/harmful environment for children and/or animals, etc.), assessing and treatment hoarding disorder requires a multi-team approach.

Counselors need to assess for status of the living environment for any:
- harm to children (if any children are living in the home)
- safety risks (fire hazards; development of mold; tainted food supply; inability for individuals living in the home to have access to exits in case of emergencies)
- harm to animals (if the individual hoards animals)
Ways to Assess
- It is helpful for counselors to gain secondhand interviews from family, friends, or co-workers of the individual struggling with hoarding disorder
- Formal interviews
